I Need a Perfect Nude Lipstick – Maybelline Velvet Beige 630

The only nude shade you should be wearing this fall

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvet Beige 630 has everything a lipstick should have – good coverage, creamy texture, low price, trendy shade – but it’s just not my cup of tea.

You know when you’re trying out a shade for the first time and then disappointment kicks in? The lipstick is so moisturizing, it applies so well, you swatched it in the store, even the label on the packaging confirms the shade is what you’re looking for, but somehow… it’s not?

Read on to find out if this lipstick should be in your makeup bag or maybe avoided.

How can this shade be so muted? Mauvy overtones are not what I was expecting, but for now this is the lipstick I wear most often.

Moisturizing, creamy nude

Maybelline Velvet Beige is a darker nude beige with pink undertones, some barely noticeable golden shimmer and a satin finish.

The texture feels smooth and very creamy, but not too heavy. The Maybelline lipstick is nicely pigmented. It can almost pass as a very tinted lip balm – it’s mostly opaque, and very moisturizing. I like that for a nude shade.

The lipstick is scented – the scent reminds me of vanilla caramel, almost like you’re hugging a teddy bear. So I guess not everyone would tolerate it. Some say it’s strong, to others it’s faint. I don’t mind.

The packaging is cute, but plasticky – this won’t go anywhere near my keys.

This is a great lipstick, but don’t expect too much. This lippie is soft like a dream and it comes off easily, but it leaves a subtle tint on the lips that stays through eating and rainstorms.

And, it doesn’t feather around the lip line. Isn’t that like the biggest thing?

The tricky shade

On me Velvet Beige looks dusty rose, almost mauve when in dim lighting. But I know that on some people it shows as more pink, brown or beige depending on their skin color or undertone. This is probably because my lips have naturally cool pigment so that pink just pops up.

The shade is really the only thing I don’t like. Muted, dusky shades generally don’t flatter me. But hey, it’s great for fall and it has some warmth so it’s wearable. It gives me my-lips-but-better look: literally my lip color, only slightly darker.

Being a medium nude, the Maybelline shade should complement anyone from pale or fair to medium skin tones.

Will this shade suit you?

What’s so strange about this shade is that it will flatter everyone and look different on almost any skin tone at the same time.

If you have your mind set on a peachy or a light brown nude and you’re fair, forget it. This is a 90’s, Spice Girls era lipstick in disguise for fair or pale people. If you have a warm/neutral skin undertone and cool-toned lips, this shade might clash with your complexion and make you look tired or older. Or mysterious. Sunlight is your best friend to keep the gray tones under control.

If you’re looking for any kind of nude, or particularly a mauvy shade, go for it. This is a great introduction to nude lipsticks. Being a neutral to cool color, I can see a lot of people being happy with it.

Moisturizing, highly pigmented, and pleasantly scented, this nude is a great option for lipstick lovers on a budget. A good quality and low price (around £7.00) – what more could you expect?

A great drugstore lipstick

Maybelline lipsticks are so easy to like. Velvet Beige is a versatile and friendly shade that goes well with everything and everybody.

It doesn’t dry out lips, it has a nice sheen and feels comfortable to wear. Pretty cheap also. This may not be the right shade for me, but maybe you’ll like it. It’s a lipstick for every occasion, almost every person and skin tone. Pair it with a blush and a touch of bronzer. Don’t go easy on mascara and you’re set to go.

In case you want to try it, you can find it on Amazon or Sainsbury’s.
